Protecting yourself against the BitTorrent bandits!

[Update: A few hours after publishing on Digg.com, the blocklist referenced in this article stopped working. The reason for this fluke is a change Bluetack made in response to the huge Digg interest. The article now links to alternate files from Bluetack that are in the correct format. It's the same list as before, but this time it's sure to be in the right format.]

If you've been using BitTorrent to download any of the more popular files, such as the latest episode of some major TV show, you may have found yourself receiving lots of "Wasted" data. This is data that has been discarded after being deemed corrupt or invalid by your BitTorrent client. Every so often, you will have received more wasted data than the size of the files you are downloading!

This is happening because Anti-P2P organizations are actively polluting P2P networks with fake peers, which send out fake or corrupt data in order to waste bandwidth and slow down file transfers. At its worst, when downloading major copyrighted torrents, as much as a fourth of the peers you are connected to can be attributed to various Anti-P2P agencies. There is also a much more serious side to this. Once you've established a connection to one of these fake "peers", your IP has been logged and will most likely be sent to the RIAA/MPAA!

But there is a way to fight back! If you are using the latest µTorrent (1.5), you can employ a little known feature called IP filtering. The author of µTorrent has gone out of his way to hide it, but it's there nonetheless. But before we can activate this filter, we need to retrieve a list of currently known Anti-P2P organization IPs.

This is most easily done by downloading the latest blacklist from Bluetack (the same people who wrote SafePeer for the Azureus BT client) at http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/nipfilter.dat.gz. This list is updated daily, and contains all known Anti-P2P organizations, trackers and peers, aswell as all known Goverment/Military IP addresses as collected by the Bluetack team. Once downloaded, extract and rename the file to "ipfilter.dat" in preparation for the final step.

To make the list available to µTorrent, you need to put it in %AppData%\uTorrent. So type this into the Address Bar, or click Start -> Run and type it there. After placing the ipfilter.dat in this folder, start µTorrent and go into preferences (Ctrl+P), then click on "Advanced". In the right hand pane, make sure that "ipfilter.enable" is set to true, and then close the dialog. That's it for the configuration.

You can verify that the list has been loaded by looking under the "Logging" tab of µTorrent, where you should see the line "Loaded ipfilter.dat (X entries)".

Congratulations! You are now protected against most of the garbage-distributing peers; and the likelyhood of the RIAA or MPAA knocking at your door has been substantially reduced! I'd go as far as to say that you shouldn't be using µTorrent at all without this feature turned on! And even if the law enforcement side of it doesn't bother you, you should still be interested in reducing the amount of garbage data that gets sent your way, which in turn leads to quicker downloads, and isn't that something everybody should strive for? ;)

Note: It's advised that you update the list at least once a month, to keep you updated on the movement of the Anti-P2P organizations. One tool that will aid you getting these updates is the "Blocklist Manager" from the same people who made the list; go to http://www.bluetack.co.uk/ and download it. On a related note, this note from the µTorrent FAQ should come in handy: "To reload ipfilter.dat without restarting µTorrent, simply open the preferences (ctrl+p), and press enter to close it again."

Happy Torrenting!

I think I found out why this doesn't work and probably isn't working for those that think it is.

Most of you, like me, see this:
[16:25:40] Loaded ipfilter.dat (0 entries)

The file was loaded correctly but if you look in the dat file the names of the businesses are in front of the IP addresses. I think this is what is causing problems. I removed the business names from the first two entries and restarted uTorrent and now it says this:
[16:25:40] Loaded ipfilter.dat (2 entries)

Maybe I am wrong, but this won't work unless someone wants to strip out everything except the IP addresses from the dat file.

1:32 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I too get 0 entries loaded. The problem is the format of the file. It is formatted like this:

Some Company Name:5.2.160.64-5.2.160.79

utorrent doesn't like the "Some Company Name:" part. If you take that part out, it will load the entry. But the file is 5+MB.. that could take some time to get them all out!

1:40 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

download the blocklist manger.

then export it as a generic file to the utorrent folder

Hi,

I'm the author of this article. I just did some investigating and found why you are now getting the "0 entries loaded" error. It seems that the pressure of the "digg effect" has made Bluetack change the blacklist format so that it's no longer compatible with µTorrent.

They probably did this because they want you to use their Blocklist Manager application. It's a good program and it helps you easily get the latest list updates. I recommended it towards the end of my article, where you can find the download link.

Using this program, you can have it download the latest filters and export the correct ipfilter.dat directly into the µTorrent folder. And all you need to do beyond the initial setup is start the program every once in a while and have it update the filters. It's the solution I currently use.

Also note that Peer Guardian is not a good solution for broadband users, read this post.

Best Regards,
Jesus.

Using Azureus with the SafePeer plugin is a much better solution:
- The blocklist is auto-updated
- No need to manually edit the list before importing
- Doesn't block web traffic like Peer Guardian as it's running inside the BT client
- Doesn't hog tons of CPU time
- Runs on more than just Windows

Just use blocklist manager to get the right list and you won't have to mess around at all. Plus its easy to update the list if you have this program..

Well, basically if you are downloading legitimate files, I don't believe there is going to be some Anti-P2P organisation trying to flood the torrent with junk data.

Moreover, this doesn't concern RIAA much if the files you're downloading or sharing is legal or legitimate.

The ipfilter.dat file that is linked to is actually a bad file - it has text to the left of the IPs and thusly doesn't work. Here's a copy of the file, that works, courtesy of a Digg user.

Let's break this down.

1) The list is auto-updated, but do you really need this? The author of uTorrent has been asked to implement it and he refused, saying it's not useful enough. Just update it yourself.

2) There is no need to manually edit the list if you use Blocklist Manager, I just downloaded it, it's good. And apparently there was no need to edit the list when he wrote the article, but the format has changed.

3) Same here, this doesn't block web traffic like Peer Guardian, just bittorrent traffic. Which is good.

4) Doesn't hog tons of CPU time? That's ludicrous! Azureus is the worst CPU hog of all bittorrent clients, using between 50-80% CPU and 100+MB ram, while still downloading a bit slower than other clients like µTorrent. I read a recent test where they ran a bunch of downloads multiple times and Azureus downloaded at 3mb/sec max, while µTorrent, probably because it's a native Windows program and not interpreted Java, ran at 3.5-3.8mb/sec. This, combined with the resource use (10-15% cpu and 2mb ram) totally anihilates Azureus!

5) Yeah, Azureus runs on more than just Windows. That's great. And the biggest reason for Azureus taking up so much cpu and memory under windows is the bad support for Java in windows. So for other platforms like OSX/Linux, you should definitely go for Azureus with the SafePeer plugin. But for windows, µTorrent+this tweak is the best!

I don't know that it's a pile of crap. Anyone that spends time looking at several available torrent programs would quickly find that Azureus, while probably the nicest looking and most popular, is a freaking RAM and CPU hog under windows. The article is pretty flawd.

1. All modern Torrent Clients check each part vs the hash. If a certain IP sends out too much corrupt data, it will be automatically be considered a 'bad peer' and will be ignored by the client. Hence 'polluting' a swarm is useless

2. IPfilters are totally random. Peerguardian and others have a lot of random ip-ranges which can not be traced back to any copyright organization whatsoever. It gives a false sense of security, for those who are optimistic.

3. If you are indeed afraid to get 'caught' (may I remind you that not ALL bittorrent traffic is considered piracy), you shouldn't be using p2p in the first place.

The point of the article is to avoid downloading any bad data in the first place, and to minimize the risk of getting nasty letters from your ISP or the police. It's true that "bad peers" will be banned by your client eventually, but why take a risk? Also, when there's a lot of these bad peers, they'll have ample time to literally flood you with useless data. Again, another reason to use a blocklist.

2. IPfilters are totally random. Peerguardian and others have a lot of random ip-ranges which can not be traced back to any copyright organization whatsoever. It gives a false sense of security, for those who are optimistic.

No list can be perfect, but this one is damn close. It's used in most security products (about 10 in total, listed on Bluetacks site) that deal with P2P safety. There's only one out there that uses a different list.

3. If you are indeed afraid to get 'caught' (may I remind you that not ALL bittorrent traffic is considered piracy), you shouldn't be using p2p in the first place.

But what's the fun in that? Also, you are sometimes forced to use P2P to get what you need. Like when cable schedules conflict and you can only watch one program and record the other, while the 3rd or 4th has to be downloaded later.

I used it for a few years too, before I discovered uTorrent. Azureus chokes out most machines, and I've read and used all the links that you provided above. I can download at 500KB/s on uTorrent across 9 torrents and see a memory usage of 5MB in my task list.

I can run azureus with no downloading and see a 20MB usage. Use it for _DOWNLOADING_? Can't even consider running more than one or two other apps at the same time.

It's a no contest issue when it comes to CPU/RAM usage. If someone prefers Azur for the features, they're probably kooky, but it's a matter of taste I suppose.

"The point of the article is to avoid downloading any bad data in the first place"
I thought the point was preventing yourself against the BitTorrent bandits? Data corrupting is inherent to data transfer. That's why BitTorrent uses hashes. So in effect your article is redundent: BitTorrent takes care of 'bandits' fine on it's own.

The only thing your ipfilter will do is reduce the 'data' from your peer list. If the data is corrupted is an entirely different story and has of yet never been proven.

"and to minimize the risk of getting nasty letters from your ISP or the police."
That's the false sense of security I was talking about earlier. Basically you're telling people that by using this iplist they wont be liable for prosecution. The origin of the list is never questioned, nor it's value.

"It's true that "bad peers" will be banned by your client eventually, but why take a risk?"
You take a risk the moment you connect to a p2p swarm. No ipfilter is going to protect you from that.

"Also, when there's a lot of these bad peers, they'll have ample time to literally flood you with useless data. Again, another reason to use a blocklist."
There is no correlation between 'bad peers' and 'bad data'. Those two are completely seperate entities. You will see a lot of clients on your bad peers list who simple are halfway around the world and get a lot of loss due to distance. This has nothing to do with being an 'evil organisation out to get you'.

"No list can be perfect, but this one is damn close."
No it's not. There has yet to be any evidence that the list is infact slightly accurate.

"It's used in most security products (about 10 in total, listed on Bluetacks site) that deal with P2P safety. There's only one out there that uses a different list."
And your point would be? Again even IF the ipfilter was 100% accurate, it STILL would NOT guarentee ANY form of protection WHATSOEVER. IP's can be changed , IP's can be spoofed. Basically, IP's don't mean ****.

But that's not the basis of my argument. My argument would be that if they are out to get you, they would just log in from some random ip, and just datamine all the ip's connected to the swarm. It's dead easy in BitTorrent (most clients save the iplist by default for future reference). Corrupting the swarm with 'bad blocks' should be the least of your concerns if you're truly worried about liability.

"But what's the fun in that?"
It's not suppossed to be fun. It's taking a decission to get pirated material at the risk of getting caught. No more, no less.

"Also, you are sometimes forced to use P2P to get what you need."
No one forces you to download. That's YOUR decission.

"Like when cable schedules conflict and you can only watch one program and record the other, while the 3rd or 4th has to be downloaded later."
That's why they invented videorecoders and TiVo. Also there are other ways than p2p to get your 'warez'. A lot of them are more secure.

Bottom line of my argument is that if you decide to use BitTorrent to get 'warez' (because that's usually what it's all about) you should not give people false ideas about doing it 'safely' by loading up some arbitrairy list of IP's. Even if the entire list would be correct, it still does not give you any more protection than anyone without the list. This is not a security measure like installing a firewall or virusscanner. The article makes it seem that way and therefor gives people a false sense of security.

Question: Is your name Jesus? Is it your intent to offend Christians with the blog name?

I'm not overly sensitive just curious where your head is.

Blogger jesusisapervert said...

Sorry if this answer runs a bit long. No, I'm not against Christians or any other religion. In fact I embrace them all equally. But that is not to say I'm a believer in any of them. Religions, as I see it, are simply the moral guidelines of their times, and should not be interpreted as historically accurate documents.

In fact, the Catholic Church is currently revising the Bible to remove some of the most gross exaggerations aswell as passages that directly promote religious fundamentalism. Things that conflict with our broader minds of today, aswell as new archeological findings that have disproven many of the stories in the Bible.

The Church no longer swearing by the accuracy of the Bible is a huge step forward from comdemning you as a heretic for even the slightest disagreement with the scripture.

In regards to my own faith, I believe that what is true for you is what you have observed yourself. No beliefs should be forced as "true" on anyone. We don't all experience the world in the same way, but that doesn't mean that our individual views are wrong. What holds true to you is what's true, in regards to faith.

Regarding my name, it really isn't Jesus.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Beautifully said. I personally see religion as nothing more than a personal choice and a set of morals. Wonderful base for any individual as it promotes a concrete moral standing, but taken too seriously, religion is easily the most volatile concept that exists anywhere.

Plus, people who are willing to die for their beliefs are generally just facing confidence issues. Think for yourself rather than letting someone tell you how it is.

Sorry tyho, that's another discussion. I've removed your post to keep this board on-topic.

Well in fairness to me, my post was a thoughtful continuation of your comment.

I didn't agree with you so I understand why you would delete it and keep glowing wisdom like,

Oh well, your moment of digg fame is over now. Good day.

is bluetack still blocking the entire ip range of time-warner/roadrunner cablemodem customers?

i tried it a couple months ago and it was pretty ridiculous. it blocks half of the world and in practice i was getting less than half as many peers when using it... hardly any usa connections.

the list is the product of semi-competent and highly opinionated teenagers... http://neuron2neuron.blogspot.com/2006/03/pg2-blocks-utorrentcom.html

i though pg was going to ditch the bluetack list, but someone above seems to think peerguardian *is* bluetack... i dunno...

this is useless. all they (**aa's) do is pay some guy to do his work from comfortable home on his dsl or cablemodem.

9:32 AM

Blogger jesusisapervert said...

@sillyrabbit:

I can't find anything on the internet about Bluetacks' list blocking the entire range of roadrunner/time-warner IPs. If it were to be true, then I think you'd at least see it mentioned somewhere? But if you think it's true then get a few rr/tw IPs and look for them in the current blocklist. If you do this, please report your findings.

@tyho:

The reason that your comment was deleted was that you blatantly called me an ignorant disbeliever who looks down upon "those of faith" (none of which is true, and I don't see how you extracted this from my post since I was saying the exact opposite of that), and not because you, as you now claim, "posted a thoughtful continuation of your comment.". It only looked like an intolerant persons attempt to start a flame war. And it was off-topic to boot. That's why it was deleted.

I'll repeat the most important words of my post again, so that you may see that I'm not taking a shot at Christians or any other religion:

"I believe that what is true for you is what you have observed yourself. No beliefs should be forced as "true" on anyone. We don't all experience the world in the same way, but that doesn't mean that our individual views are wrong. What holds true to you is what's true, in regards to faith."

How can you call me an ignorant disbeliever based on that? If you want me to explain it for you, it means that I accept every persons view. And that even if I disagree with someone, we'd still both be right since every persons view is unique. What works for you is what's true for you.

This is not the right forum if you want to discuss religion. And you probably realized that yourself as your deleted post ended in "I don't mean to hijack your thread here."

I also don't wish to continue the discussion. This is not the forum, and you are clearly not receptive.

I will say my deleted post actually ended with the phrase,"I hope we all are always free to believe what we wish.pce"

While your blog name is just a joke to you, as you said on Digg, to a huge group of people it is offensive. I just don't understand why anyone would choose to do so.

Maybe you shouldn't be labeling others as intolerant before you look inward. Labels usually only serve to end intelligent discussion anyway.

Peerguardian bad for broadband? i found it poses zero problems, neither does the safepeer plugin for azureus, i use both and get good speeds, usually higher than the torrent average.

As for peerguardian blocking http, turn the feature off!

piracy should'nt be easy, a long time ago it was'nt, you had to work to get your stolen apps, games etc., then the p2p stuff came along which made things much easier and everyone wanted a piece, now its getting a little (only a little it still 'aint rocket science!) harder again, at least it is in the legal quagmire that is the USA! ;)

IMPORTANT - Please notice! -

"
You may have noticed that PG2 started blocking utorrent.com. This is because µTorrent’s developer recently licensed his backend technology to a company known for monitoring P2P networks.

Today we confirmed that it is for a new content distribution system - something explicitly stated in the contract, meaning they are not allowed to use it for monitoring P2P users or anything else.

So is helping out a company known for P2P monitoring morally wrong? Maybe. But everyone needs to eat. The licensing had no malicious intent toward P2P users, and it does not affect µTorrent in any way.

Yet it is still blocked. This is because we are still silently redirecting all of your list downloads to our friends at Bluetack while we get our own lists ready. Adding or removing things from their lists is something we have no control over."

Not going to be used to monitor psp? yean right!!!

and - as said before azureus can indeed hog resources if you DO NOT set configurations properly.

Here's how I got it to work. First, I copied all the ip addresses to notepad and saved the file. Then, I changed the name of the .txt to "ipfilter.dat" Then placed that in the appropriate folder. seemed to work better than just saving the link as.

12:38 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

An extremely useful bit of info.Thanks.I'm reasonably new to using utorrent and wanted to block an ip, now creating an ipfilter.dat or new text document and then renaming it to ipfilter.dat and pasting the list into it worked first time.I can now monitor ip's and ban specific ones I don't like .thanks again.

heres how i got it to work, dunno if it's a real solution or just one of those random things;

Downloaded nipfilter.dat.gz
Renamed to ipfilter.dat (but got 0 entries)

Renamed back to .gz version, and EXTRACTED nipfilter.dat as ipfilter.dat with winzip into the appropriate utorrent folder..

Presto, it worked fine after that. So the main problem seemed that i renamed instead of extracting, even though I could edit the renamed version with notepad and it looked fine.

Hope this works for someone else.

Are you suffering from pain and having a hard time satisfying your partner? - Peyronie’s disease is a condition considered as form of impotence (referred to as erectile dysfunction) resulting the penis to bend during erection. It is characterized by the appearance of a hard, fibrous layer of scar tissue (plaque) that usually develops under the skin, on the upper or lower side of the penis. http://www.levitrabliss.com/

I would like to burn a theme at this forum. There is such a nicey, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of financial piramyde, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For several years , I make money with the help of these programs.
I don't have problems with money now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I get now up to 2G a day , and I started with funny 500 bucks.
Right now, I'm very close at catching at last a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Visit my blog to get additional info.
